An 11-year-old middle school student in Woburn was taken into custody Thursday morning after "slashing" another student.

According to a joint statement from the city's Mayor, Police Chief and Superintendent of Schools, the victim, a 12-year-old male, was taken to a local hospital with injuries considered non life-threatening.

The 11-year-old was quickly taken into custody moments after the incident took place and  a "small knife was seized", according to the statement.

"Due to the fact that this incident involves juveniles, there are certain things we cannot discuss under the law, but we have determined that this incident was not a random act and it appears to be an isolated incident," read the statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, the school was placed in Shelter in Place mode during the initial investigation, but the school has returned to its normal schedule at this time.

"The alleged assailant will face discipline from the school district and may face charges at Lowell Juvenile Court as the police investigation is ongoing."

School officials also stated that "there is no further danger to the school" following the incident Thursday morning. Very scary stuff, but kudos to those who were on the scene and acted quickly.
