An illegal firearm was confiscated and consequential arrest made when the Pittsfield Police Department apprehended a city man who was carrying a stolen weapon.

According to the Pittsfield Police Department yesterday at approximately 3:00 p.m., Pittsfield Police were notified of an individual walking in the area of Tyler and Cherry Streets, that appeared to be handling and/or adjusting a firearm. Patrol Units were immediately dispatched.  The Morningside area of the city has seen several incidents of gun violence in the past few months.

The first arriving Patrol Officer exited his cruiser and ordered the individual to expose his hands, at which point the suspect began running from the Officer. The Officer pursued the suspect on foot, and additional Patrol Units in the area assisted. The suspect was quickly apprehended in the area of Tyler and Grove Streets. He was identified as Andre Austin, age 32, of Pittsfield. Austin was found to be in possession of a Taurus .38 Caliber Revolver, which was previously stolen out of the state of Georgia.
