As expected, the City of Pittsfield has declared a snow emergency as we're in the middle of a storm that, up to this point as we write, has been a bit of a let down.

It doesn't seem that it will remain that way, however, as the storm will get heavier through the late afternoon and into the early hours of Thursday morning. Pittsfield is preparing for that by declaring the emergency, which will last for the next couple of days.

"In light of the expected snow accumulation today through Thursday, March 8, the City of Pittsfield has declared a snow emergency and on-street parking ban effective 6 p.m. through 7 a.m. Friday, March 9," said a statement from city officials.

"Vehicles parked on city streets must be removed to allow for plowing. Parking restrictions for the McKay Street Garage will be waived as both this garage and the first floor of the Columbus Avenue Garage will be open and available for parking. Please park in non-reserved spaces.

"Please keep fire hydrants and sidewalks shoveled and accessible in case of emergencies. Garbage pickup is canceled; pickup may resume on Thursday afternoon, weather dependent."
