What is a Bump Out? Why They’re Popping Up In Massachusetts
Bump outs are being installed in municipalities throughout Massachusetts and residents' feelings about them seem to be mixed. I almost hit one the other day, so I can understand why - although I do believe in their purpose.
Bump outs, also called curb extensions, are parts of the sidewalk that stick out into the street like a little bump. They usually happen at corners or crosswalks. Instead of the road being super wide, the bump out makes it narrower. This helps kids, families, and everyone walk more safely.
Why Are Bump Outs Being Installed?
Cities like here in Pittsfield put in bump outs for three big reasons. First, they shorten the distance you have to walk across the street. A normal road might be 40 feet wide, but a bump out can cut that in half. Second, they slow down cars. Drivers have to turn more carefully, so they don’t speed around corners. Third, bump outs make it easier for drivers and walkers to see each other.
How New Is This Idea?
Bump outs aren’t brand new. Cities around the world have used them for over 50 years. But in the United States, they’ve become much more popular in the last 10–15 years.
Where Are They in Massachusetts?
You’ll find bump outs in bigger cities and towns. Boston uses them a lot and adds green plants to fight flooding. Millbury is building them downtown to make the area prettier and safer. Places like Cambridge, Somerville, and Worcester have them too. At least 5 to 10 towns across the state have tried them, and more are planning projects with help from the state. -millburyma.gov
What Do Residents Think?
When construction is ongoing, the vibe is negative surrounding the subject of bump out installation, with some saying that they're a waste of money.
Most people like bump outs once they’re in. Walkers say they feel safer, and parents love shorter crossings for kids. Some drivers worry about parking spots at first, but cities usually only remove a few. After a year, almost everyone agrees the streets are calmer and friendlier. This was my experience in Pittsfield - once you're aware they're there - you'll avoid them.
