New Lynn, MA Dairy Queen Now Open

When we were kids growing up in Lynn in the late '80s and early '90s, news of Wyoma Square's Dairy Queen closing all to make way for an incoming Walgreens was devastating! Frequent trips to what I remember as a walk-up ice cream place was my first introduction to soft serve ice cream, cherry and butterscotch dip, and my one true love - the Oreo Blizzard.

I was visiting my mother in my hometown of Lynn back in March when I saw the "DQ Coming Soon" sign up on the former Santander Bank location on Broadway adjacent to the fire house. There was no opening date then, but on July 20th, Lynn's Wyoma area Dairy Queen, after more than 30 years, had returned to a line of people waiting to enjoy.

The first customer was said to be a Pickering Middle School student who ordered an Oreo Blizzard.

DQ has changed since 1990

Growing up, Dairy Queen, now known as just (DQ) in Massachusetts felt like a rite of summer. You'd pull into a tiny stand, order a dipped cone, and eat it on a picnic table before it melted all over your hand. Thirty years later, a lot of that has changed. Many of the old walk-up stands got replaced with bigger, sit-down locations that serve full meals, not just soft serve. The menu grew too. Blizzards used to be the big draw, and now you've got burgers, chicken baskets, and seasonal drinks competing for space right next to them.

I had the pleasure of taking my two sons to the new Lynn DQ over the weekend and we enjoyed Oreo Blizzards together. Life has come full circle!
