Warmer temperatures have finally arrived, and many folks in Massachusetts are starting to plan their summer vacations. The majority of those are to the beach.

According to the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, over 26 million people visit the sandy shores annually. Domestic tourism spending alone brings $1.37 billion into the Barnstable County economy. Even folks just making a day trip to Cape Cod spend $200 per travel party, per day.

With over 560 miles of sandy shoreline and over 130 beaches, visitors to Massachusetts have plenty of beaches to choose from, although not all are created equal. While some folks are looking for a family-friendly atmosphere, others might be looking for a more private, quiet getaway. It's fair to say, Cape Cod has something for everyone.

Recently, one of those beautiful Cape beaches was recognized as one of the best in the U.S., but not just by anyone, by "Dr. Beach".

Dr. Beach Dubs This Massachusetts Beach Top Ten in the United States

Who the heck is Dr. Beach? Stephen Leatherman, is an American geoscientist, coastal ecologist, and author, who also goes by Dr. Beach. According to his website, for over three decades he has reviewed, evaluated and rated beaches and coastal areas throughout the world.

In addition to his annual ranking of America's Best Beaches, he works tirelessly to increase awareness about the dangers of rip currents and to promote no smoking at beaches.

So which Massachusetts beach did the doctor assign to the top ten best beaches in the United States? Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, on Cape Cod.

Here's what Dr. Beach had to say:

Coast Guard Beach is accessible by bicycle from the Salt Pond Visitor’s Center or shuttle bus.  The picturesque old Coast Guard station still sits atop the glacial bluffs, allowing for a spectacular view of the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay.  During the summer, beachgoers take quick, refreshing dips in the ocean as the water is chilly.  In recent years, seals have moved northward from Monomoy Island Wildlife Refuge into the populated beaches, which has attracted great white sharks.  The lifeguards do a terrific job of warning if these predators are present by flying red flags with shark images on those days. Therefore, always swim near a lifeguard so that you will be safe.
