The Berkshire Humane Society was on-air with us this morning promoting their pet of the week for adoption when John Perrault, the BHS president, mentioned that dog adoptions are down in Massachusetts and nationwide. Why is this? Most likely, cost.

The average yearly cost to own a dog in Massachusetts

Owning a dog in Massachusetts is fun but can be expensive. On average, it costs about $2,500 to $4,000 a year to care for a dog. This is higher than many states because living in Massachusetts, especially in cities like Boston, is pricey. The first year might cost more, around $3,500 to $6,000, because of one-time expenses.

How do people acquire their dogs?

How do people get dogs? Many adopt from shelters like the MSPCA, which costs $150 to $600. Adoption often includes vaccines and spaying or neutering, saving money. Others buy from breeders, which can cost $500 to $2,000 or more for special breeds like French Bulldogs. We bought a French Bulldog and it was not cheap! Some people even rescue dogs for free from friends or community posts, but they might need extra vet care.

What are the individual costs?

Yearly costs include food, about $800 to $1,400, depending on if you buy basic kibble or fancy brands. Vet visits, like checkups and vaccines, cost $500 to $1,000. Massachusetts vets charge more than in other states, but low-cost clinics can help. Grooming, like baths and nail trims, runs $150 to $250. If you work a lot, dog walking or daycare might add $500 to $1,000. Toys, treats, and flea medicine cost around $150 to $300. Pet insurance, which covers big vet bills, is about $400 to $600 a year. You also need a dog license, which is $20 or less.

You can certainly save money by shopping at big stores like Costco, or use low-cost vet clinics. Dogs need love and care, so plan your budget to keep them healthy and happy.
