Temps Drop to 1°F Tonight: How to Protect Your Pipes in the Berkshires
With temperatures plunging into the single digits across Berkshire County, frozen pipes are no longer a hypothetical problem, they're a costly reality for many homeowners.

Frozen pipes can burst, causing thousands of dollars in water damage. But there are steps you can take right now to protect your home.
Prevention:
Before temperatures drop, open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes. Let faucets drip slightly overnight, even a trickle can prevent freezing by keeping water moving. A lot of people don't realize their basement or crawl space pipes are the most vulnerable, if you have exposed pipes in unheated areas, wrap them with insulation or heat tape before the next cold snap.
If Pipes Freeze:
First, turn on the faucet. Even if no water comes out, leave it open, when the pipe thaws, water needs somewhere to go. Never use an open flame to thaw pipes. Instead, use a hair dryer, heat lamp, or hot towels wrapped around the frozen section. Start closest to the faucet and work backward. If you can't locate the freeze or access the pipe, call a professional immediately. Burst pipes can cause extensive damage in minutes.
When To Call a Plumber:
Call a plumber if you turn on a faucet and nothing comes out, if you hear banging or clanking in your walls, or if you see visible cracks or bulges in exposed pipes. Don't wait until it bursts, by then, you're looking at emergency rates plus water damage repair.
Most plumbing companies in the Berkshires are already booked solid with frozen pipe calls, so acting quickly is essential.
Quick Prevention Checklist:
Let faucets drip when temps drop below 20°F - Open cabinet doors under sinks - Keep your thermostat at 55°F minimum, even when away - Insulate pipes in unheated areas - Disconnect outdoor hoses - Know where your main water shutoff valve is located.
