The story out of Eastern Massachusetts made for some good radio fodder this morning!

The Ipswich boys lacrosse team had a hell of year - and they were just one win away from playing in the big championship game. However, a graduation photo that was shared on social media ended of all that.

One of the dads thought he was slick and may have made it worse, though. Let's get into it.

After graduation, some seniors posed for a pic in their cap and gowns on the beach with cigars hanging out of their mouth. Cigars have been symbolic of celebratory milestones or victory of some sort forever, but those students are 17 and 18, and that picture technically violates the MIAA's rules on tobacco usage. The school ended up suspending six of the team's players forcing them to forfeit the state semifinal against Cohasset, according to nbcnews.com

Here's the thing - if the cigars weren't lit - I think it's fine, however there were reports of another picture showing some of the students smoking the cigars, which definitely breaks that rule.

Ipswich Lacrosse Dad’s Fake Cigar Plan Backfires

When things get funky is when one of the dads tries to concoct this story that the cigars were fake - claiming that he rolled them with tea leaves like chamomile or English breakfast. He even went as far as to show school officials a receipt from Shaw's Supermarket where he allegedly purchased the ingredients. The problem is - the date on the receipt was for the day AFTER the photo was taken. Ruh Roh.

It was a nice try.

Rules are rules in high school sports and I commend the dad for trying to save the lacrosse season. But, a quick honest conversation might have changed everything. Instead one photo and a shaky cover turned into a forfeit!
