If you've ever done a burpee, you probably just read that headline and thought, WHY ON EARTH would anyone want to attempt a Guinness World Record for doing the most?! At least that's the first thing that crossed my mind, however local man Josh Reis thinks otherwise.

Reis, a member at Soules Fitness in Lee, will attempt the most burpees done in 12 hours. Soules Fitness, owned and operated by Justin and Ashley Soules, will host the event, officially supported by the Guinness Book, this Thursday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.  In that 12 hour period, Reis will attempt to complete 5000 burpees, which if you break down the numbers, is 416.7 an hour, or 6.9 per minute.

While the challenge and the record are certainly a motivating factor, Reis and Soles Fitness are collecting pledges to raise money for a Calisthenics Park for the Town of Lee.  People can pledge one penny per burpee completed with a max of $50 or just donate a selected amount. Those interested can donate here.

I know what it’s like to not be able to do a single Burpee. 150 pounds ago it was hard to jump up off the ground let alone complete a full Burpee. I want to show people that it doesn’t matter where you started but that as cheesy as it sounds, you really can do anything that you set your mind to with a little hard work. I want to represent the gym that helped to change my life, and maybe show other people that it’s time to start to change theirs too. So if somehow I actually am able to break this record, it’s for everyone who felt like they were never good enough. Push your limits – someone once told me that if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.

Soules Fitness is asking any and everyone to stop into the gym at any point during the day to cheer Reis on or even do some burpees with him to help keep him motivated. Soules Fitness is located at 925 Pleasant St., Lee.
