Man Successfully Rescued From Cave In Lanesborough
Chief Charlie Durfee has been a member of the Lanesborough Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years and Chief for 13, but he has never been to a call quite like this.
Saturday night around 9:12 PM, LVFD was dispatched to 96 Silver St. in Lanesborough for a report of a man stuck head first up to his waist in a cave.
If I remember correctly, there's like 68 caves in the town of Lanesborough, and up on Silver St. alone there's like 20 of them. - LVFD Chief Durfee
Western Massachusetts Technical Rescue Team was called to assist with their tripod, ropes, and harness. After about an hour and a half, crews were able to safely extricate the man from the cave. He was then transported to BMC for evaluation for a head laceration.
Helping alongside LVFD and WMTRT was Lanesborough Police Sgt. Lepicer, County Ambulance, Pittsfield Fire Chief Robert Czerwinski, and Dalton Fire Chief Gerald Cahalan Jr.
It was just a phenomenal team effort from everyone that was there. - LVFD Chief Durfee
The man is expected to be OK.
