Massachusetts has been experiencing some pleasant weather lately. Sure, we had some hot, humid weather last Friday (June 12), but for the most part, the weather and temperature have been a delight. Although, as I say this, I have to remind myself that summer hasn't officially begun at this point.

There's no doubt that as summer moves along, and we get into the heart of the season, we'll experience some hot and uncomfortable days. When those days arrive, it's important to remember not to overexert yourself on those days. Instead, you should take it easy, drink plenty of fluids, and get near some air conditioning. If you don't have AC in your home, many organizations like libraries and community centers offer cooling centers, which are usually open to the public on those really hot days.

In addition to keeping yourself cool and comfortable, it's very important that if you're traveling with your pets or kids, to doublecheck and make sure you don't leave them in the back seat, especially if the windows are rolled up on a hot day. It may sound silly that this warrants a reminder, but dogs and children have died from heatstroke because they were left alone in cars during hot weather.

As a matter of fact, if you leave a dog or a child in the car when it's hot out, the State of Massachusetts can fine you up to $500, and you may even have to face jail time. If you see a pet or a child left alone in a car on a hot day, you're urged to call 911 asap and/or get the child or pet out immediately, even if it means smashing a window. In this case, you wouldn't be at fault. You can read more about the law here.
