Richmond Cow on the Run After Busting Through Gates and Electric Fence
A black Angus steer is on the loose somewhere in Richmond, and if you spot him, state police want to hear from you.
The yearling, weighing around 600 pounds, has been missing for three days. He belongs to Richmond resident and local gastroenterologist Dr. Ira Schmelkin, who joined us on air this morning to share the story.
Dr. Schmelkin recently purchased the steer from Stannard Conebrook Farm on the Richmond/West Stockbridge line. Look for a black Angus with a tag marked "505" in his right ear.
This cow means business. Before disappearing, he busted through metal gates and an electrified fence to make his escape. Dr. Schmelkin contacted Massachusetts State Police, who were pretty unfazed by the call. "This happens all the time," troopers told him.
Fair enough, we guess.
Typically, a cow will wander back toward where it gets fed. But since this steer was newly acquired and doesn't have that home base instinct yet, his whereabouts are anyone's guess.
Dr. Schmelkin figures the animal may have headed deep into the wooded areas of Richmond, and for all he knows, may have crossed over the mountain and ended up somewhere in Lenox or Lee.
He says he has a drone that he put up in the air, but due to the canopy of the trees, he was unable to locate the cow and joking suggested that someone let him borrow a thermal drone.
If you spot him, contact the Massachusetts State Police Lee Barracks. They have all the contact information needed to reach Dr. Schmelkin directly.
BOLO, Berkshires. This one is out there somewhere.
