We're in the 'Retail Apocalypse' Era

I have been interested lately in which department stores are doing well and which ones are on the verge of extinction. That interest probably came about because we hear so much lately of another store or restaurant on the verge of bankruptcy or going out of business. It seems like every or every other day another business is closing its doors.

Even in These Tough Times, One Department Store is Doing Big Business

One company whose department stores are doing very well is Macy's. According to Statista, in 2023, Macy's was the top department store in the United States. Here's a quote from the website:

In 2023, Macy's was ranked as the the leading department store in the United States, with sales amounting to about 23 billion U.S. dollars. Kohl's followed, with sales reaching over 16.5 billion. In October of 2022, U.S. department store sales reached 10.9 billion U.S. dollars.

Macy's is Feeling the Effects of the Change in Shopping Trends as Well

Eventhough Macy's brought in billions of dollars in 2023 the company announced earlier this year that the department-store chain would be laying off roughly 2,350 employees which is about 3.5% of their workforce. The company said that it would be closing five stores in order to adjust to the online shopping era.
