Motorcyclist Killed In North Adams Crash

A young adult riding a motorcycle was killed Wednesday night in a crash at the south entrance to Walmart in North Adams.

It happened around 7:44 p.m. at the intersection of Route 8 and South State Street. The motorcycle was heading south on Route 8. An SUV coming the other way turned left toward South State Street, crossing into the southbound lane, and struck the motorcycle.

Both vehicles took heavy damage. The airbags went off in the SUV.

Northern Berkshire EMS took the rider to North Adams Regional Hospital. The rider was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police have not released the rider’s name yet. They say that will come in the coming days. The driver of the SUV has not been identified either. That name will only be released if charges are filed.

This stretch of Curran Highway near Walmart and Hodges Cross Road remains the most crash-prone area in North Adams, according to data provided by North Adams Police.

For the last seven years, Curran Highway consistently had the most crashes, though numbers have somewhat improved in recent years thanks to a shift in the traffic signal pattern. -berkshireeagle.com

The crash is still under investigation. On scene were the North Adams Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Unit, Northern Berkshire EMS, and the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office.
