Pecks Road Crash: What We Know and What Witnesses Can Do
Two young people are fighting for their lives after a devastating rollover crash on Pecks Road Sunday morning.
The Pittsfield Police Department reports that both occupants of a Toyota Corolla - ages 20 and 21 - were ejected from the vehicle and sustained life-threatening injuries. One victim has been transferred to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield due to the severity of their injuries.
According to police, the vehicle was traveling south at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control near 469 Pecks Road. The Corolla struck and broke a utility pole, careened into two parked vehicles in a nearby driveway, then rolled over at least twice before coming to rest.
Both victims were initially transported to Berkshire Medical Center before one was transferred for more intensive care. The fact that both occupants were ejected from the vehicle indicates they likely were not wearing seatbelts - a critical factor in rollover crashes where ejection dramatically increases the risk of death or serious injury.
Pecks Road was closed for approximately five hours between Thomas Island Road and Bromback Street while investigators worked the scene and crews cleared the wreckage. The road reopened around 3:45 p.m.
Now, police are asking for the community's help.
Investigators are seeking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or seen the Toyota Corolla on Pecks Road in the moments before the accident. Even seemingly minor details could prove crucial to understanding what happened.
If you have any information, contact Sgt. David Hallas of the Pittsfield Police Department's Traffic Unit at 413-448-9700, ext. 560, or Officer Matthew Farnham at ext. 531.
As these two young people fight for recovery, this crash serves as a stark reminder: high speeds and failure to wear seatbelts can turn a Sunday morning drive into a life-or-death situation in seconds.
Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
