Herberg to Reid: What One Parent Heard at the Open House
Pittsfield parents are about to find out what the new middle school setup actually feels like.
Starting this year, Herberg is grades 5 and 6. Reid is grades 7 and 8. Every seventh and eighth grader in the city is heading to Reid.
Kate Teutsch, one the sales managers here at the radio station, popped on-air this morning. Her son Seth was at Herberg last year and is now heading to Reid. His first reaction? He did not want to switch schools. New building, new teachers, new everything. The good news is most of his friends are making the move with him.
Reid Middle School Open House
Kate went to the open house at Reid the other night and left with more questions than answers. She said the presentation felt rushed. They flew through red teams, blue teams, A teams, B teams, and alternating schedules. When it was over, it was basically “okay, go tour the school.” She said a lot of parents walked out still confused about what the year is actually going to look like.

She’s thinking about joining the site council because of it. That’s not usually her thing, but she wants clearer information for families.
Opting for Taconic because of vocational classes
On the other end of the spectrum, her daughter Zoe is starting at Taconic after getting in through the lottery. Nearly 230 kids were on the waiting list. Zoe is interested in the vocational side, especially auto body. Kate said the girl doesn’t even see it as a gender thing. She just likes the work.
School starts Monday, August 31. That’s ten days before Labor Day. Early start times, early buses, and a lot of kids who have been sleeping in all summer are about to get a rude awakening!
