Police Ammo Budget Jumps $20K, But It's Not What It Sounds Like

This fiscal year's city budget set aside nearly $74,00 dollars for ammunition and supplies. That's $20,000 dollars more than last year. When people hear that, it might sound like the police are loading up on bullets. But it's not what it sounds like.

Police Chief Marc Maddalena explained that the extra money mostly comes from two things. First, the state now requires more training for officers. Second, ammunition costs have gone up everywhere.

Why is ammunition cost going up? Answers include global demand, raw material price increase due to tariffs etc, and supply chain issues for gun powder.

Chief Maddalena put it this way: "It's more than just bullets for our guns."
