Pittsfield Police are calling a threatening message making its way around the country “unsubstantiated.”  

According to a media report from the Pittsfield Police Department, a social media message that had been circulating in various communities around the country has gained traction among students in the city of Pittsfield. 

Concern within the local school community...

Police Lt. Gary Traversa says that the social media message has caused some concern within the Pittsfield Public School community. He says that the message, which threatens violence, has not been accompanied by any corroborating information, and police do NOT believe that the threat is credible.

According to the release, the message is consistent with a nationwide hoax, and no specific threat directed at a Pittsfield School was received. 

Proper precautions are being taken...

Pittsfield Police are collecting any information provided, as the viral effect of the messaging has continued to circulate among the Pittsfield Public School community this morning. ~ via Police Report

 

Out of an abundance of caution, Patrol Officers are also providing visibility and support to the affected Pittsfield Public School Buildings. 

Anyone with any information that can be helpful should contact the Detective Bureau Tip Line at 413-448-9706, or you can submit an online report via the Pittsfield Police Department website. www.pittsfieldpd.org. 

Refrain from calling the police department's dispatch center...

The report reminds local residents that calls to the department's dispatch center should be for emergencies only and that the dispatchers have no information to provide to the public.
