Do You Remember When Ryan Cabrera Played Chameleon’s?
Dude...
Remember Ryan Cabrera? If you were listening to the radio in 2004, you know exactly who I'm talking about. "On the Way Down" was everywhere. And yeah, I'll admit it, I was kind of a fan.
Here's the part that's wild, though. Back in October of 2012, Ryan Cabrera played a show right here in Pittsfield. At Chameleons Nightclub on East Street, before it closed and became The Hangar. Does anyone remember him playing here?
By that point, he had faded from mainstream popularity and was touring solo, playing acoustic all ages shows. He told the Berkshire Eagle he was on the road somewhere near Chicago when he did the interview, working on new music and trying to get back to a simpler singer-songwriter sound after his label dropped him following his second album. -berkshireeagle.com
I remember being a little starstruck by this guy back in the day, not just because of the music but because he had that funky hair and was dating Ashlee Simpson at the time. I won't lie, younger me was a little jealous. The guy was everywhere, magazines, MTV, all of it. And then a few years later he's playing an acoustic set at a nightclub in Pittsfield, Massachusetts! Yikes.
Look, no shade to Ryan Cabrera at all. Everybody's career has chapters, and playing smaller rooms and staying independent after a major label passes on you takes real guts. But there is something crazy about the fact that a guy who was once dating a Simpson sister ended up playing a small club in Pittsfield, MA on his way to the next town over.
Anybody out there actually remember catching that show at Chameleons back in 2012?
