250 Starbucks Stores Are Closing. Here’s Where Our 5 Local Spots Are.
Starbucks says it will close about 250 stores across North America this week. That's only about 1% of its more than 18,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
The company hasn't said which stores are on the list. It hasn't even said how many are in the U.S. So I can't tell you yet if any of ours are closing. -cnbc.com
We have five Starbucks in the Berkshires. There's the one on Hubbard Avenue at Berkshire Crossing, one inside Market 32, one in Lee, one in Lanesborough (Target), and the brand new one on South Street in Pittsfield, next to Guido's.
In a letter to workers, a Starbucks leader said the closing stores either aren't making enough money or can't give customers the kind of visit the company wants.
This is the second big round of cuts in a year. Last September, Starbucks closed 627 stores in North America and Europe. Even so, it kept building new ones, like our South Street spot.
The company is also slowing down. It now plans to add about 440 new stores this year, down from 600 to 650.
CEO Brian Niccol has been trying to bring back the old Starbucks feel. That means real coffee mugs, notes written on cups, free refills and more places to sit. About 1,500 stores are getting a makeover by the end of this month.
If a store closes, Starbucks says it will try to move workers to other stores. If it can't, they'll get severance pay.
I love that fact that the CEO is trying to get people back in the stores again - people need less virtual connection!
