If your phone has been lighting up from a local number that says Tufts Health Direct, you are not the only one. I have had a bunch of these calls. The person on the line wanted to send a nurse to my house for a checkup. Vitals, the whole thing. I said no.

I have been with Tufts for 8 years and I see my doctor once a year, I have never received a phone call like this before.

She kept pushing. I said no four times. Then she told me she would call back later and schedule a Zoom visit instead. Only after this did she reveal that she was a "third party" working with Tufts.

So what was this phone call?

Here is what this usually is. Tufts Health Direct is a real Massachusetts health plan sold on the Health Connector. Plans like this run outreach programs where a nurse, or a company the plan hires, offers a free home visit. They check blood pressure, go over your meds, and ask a long list of health questions. It is not the same as your doctor coming over. It is extra. You do not have to do it to keep your coverage.

Why are they so pushy? The visit gives the plan a fuller picture of your health. That can help them flag gaps in care. It can also affect how the plan gets paid, because documented conditions change the risk score tied to a member. That is why the caller does not love hearing no.

If they call you, do this. Do not book anything on that call. Hang up and call the member number on the back of your Tufts card. Ask if the outreach is real, and ask them to take you off the list. You can say no to the house visit and no to the Zoom. A no is a full answer. Write down the date, the number, and what they said. If they keep calling after you opt out, tell member services again and ask for a supervisor.

They called me again today...

Your insurance does not get to schedule a nurse into your living room just because you pay the premium!
