Pittsfield firefighters battled frigid temperatures late Friday night while responding to a structure fire that left one woman hospitalized and a home severely damaged, according to Deputy Chief Neil Myers.

The Pittsfield Fire Department was called to 7 Virginia Avenue at 11:21 p.m. on January 31st for a reported house fire. Four engine companies, a ladder company, and a deputy chief responded to the scene.

Engine 2 arrived within 60 seconds of leaving the station and found flames coming from the front of the single-story cape cod style home. Crews immediately stretched a hose line and began attacking the fire while making entry into the building.

During the initial search, firefighters from Engine 2 and Tower 1 located a female victim on the first floor. She was quickly removed from the home and transported by Action Ambulance to Berkshire Medical Center. No other victims were found during subsequent searches of the residence.

Additional engine companies worked to establish a water supply while crews continued fighting the blaze. The fire was brought under control in less than 30 minutes, though firefighters spent another half hour extinguishing hot spots and overhauling the structure.

Due to the extreme cold, the Hinsdale Fire Department responded with their rehab bus, providing warm shelter, food, and drinks for personnel throughout the incident. Several off-duty Pittsfield firefighters were also called back to staff the command position and cover headquarters.

County Ambulance provided EMS coverage during the emergency. Fire investigators from the Pittsfield Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police Fire Marshal's office responded to determine the cause. One firefighter sustained a minor wrist sprain but did not require treatment.

As of Saturday morning, one engine company remained at the scene to assist investigators and monitor for any remaining hot spots. The home suffered severe fire and water damage throughout, and all utilities have been disconnected. No damage estimate was available.

Further details on the victim's condition will be released upon completion of the investigation.
