Whatever Happened To This Disgusting Massachusetts Soda?
Marjo and I were talking about my former love for Diet Coke. Yes, it was like crack to me, I used to drink like 4 cans a day. Seltzer water has replaced my love for Diet Coke, nice and fizzy accompanied with loud burps. It's amazing stuff.
All the soda talk this morning reminded me of my Uncle Terry and his obsession with Moxie.
Moxie, kind of similar to root beer, was created by Augustin Thompson in 1876 in Lowell, MA. It is made from gentian root extract, which is extremely bitter. Let's face it, Moxie is nasty, but some people apparently love it.
YOU MIGHT NOT SEE MOXIE ON SHELVES EVERYWHERE, BUT YOU CAN DEFINITELY STILL GET IT!
According to drinkmoxie.com, not only is the soft drink the oldest produced in the U.S., but it comes in a diet version as well!
It has been said that New Englanders in particular have a special affection for Moxie. Not surprisingly so, as us folks from the North seem to be tougher than say Southern Californians? This is probably ludicrous, but I wrote it anyway.
