2-6 Inches of Snow and Dangerous Wind Chills To Hit the Berkshires
Berkshire County residents should prepare for a one-two punch of winter weather tonight as snow moves in accompanied by dangerous wind chills that could threaten health and safety this weekend.
Snow is expected to begin this evening, with accumulations possible overnight into early Saturday morning. While totals are still being monitored, even light accumulations combined with gusty winds could create hazardous travel conditions on local roads.
2-6 Inches of Snow and Dangerous Wind Chills To Hit the Berkshires
Friday night: Snow showers early will become steadier snow overnight. Very cold. Low 11F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 80%. Snow accumulating 1 to 3 inches.
Saturday: Intermittent snow showers, especially early. Morning high of 16F with temps falling to near 5. Winds NW at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of snow 60%. Snowfall around one inch. Higher wind gusts possible.
Saturday night: Partly cloudy. Low -8F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph.
Sunday: Sunny and bitter cold. 5F
Drivers should plan for reduced visibility and slippery surfaces, especially on untreated back roads and elevated surfaces.
The more significant concern is the extreme cold. Wind chill values are forecast to plummet well below zero tonight through the weekend, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10-30 minutes when wind chills drop this low.
Local officials are urging residents to take precautions: dress in layers if you must go outside, cover all exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Check on elderly neighbors and those without adequate heating. Bring pets indoors and ensure outdoor animals have proper shelter from the wind.
This is also a critical time to ensure your home is prepared. Prevent frozen pipes by letting faucets drip slightly and opening cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air circulation. Keep your gas tank at least half full in case of emergency travel needs.
