101 on West Street in Pittsfield inside the Holiday Inn is closed until further notice, and the reason is the building around it.

John, Tucker, and the staff posted today on Facebook that the restaurant cannot open while the Holiday Inn at 1 West Street stays shut. They apologized for the inconvenience and said they will welcome people back as soon as they can.

The hotel is the old Crowne Plaza, right near Park Square. It is 14 stories, with about 107 rooms. All three elevators went down. About 35 rooms had guests in them when the last one quit. Mayor Peter Marchetti said the city found out because people on the upper floors could not get out. Pittsfield firefighters and County Ambulance walked them down, including a handicapped guest who was not on the first floor. After that, the building commissioner shut the place down. You cannot run a hotel if people cannot get in and out.

Marchetti said this is how you end up with zero elevators. One goes down, and you still have two. The second goes down, and you still have one. When the third goes down, that is it. He does not know if it was a mechanical problem or an electrical panel that took all three at once.

One elevator has been fixed. It still cannot carry anybody. Massachusetts has to inspect it first, and the city is pushing the state to get there sooner. New bookings on the hotel site start November 1. The mayor said that date could move up once the elevators are cleared. They already have a big weekend on the books, and leaf-peeper season is here. If those guests book somewhere else, the city could lose that business to Lenox.

Until the state signs off, the Holiday Inn stays closed. And until the hotel reopens, so does 101.
