Box Truck ‘Storrowed’ By Jason Street Overpass In Pittsfield

I stepped outside the radio station on Jason Street this morning around 9:20 and saw something you don't see every day. A young guy was standing next to his box truck, rubbing the top of his head, just staring at what used to be a truck. The whole top of it was ripped open like a sardine can.

Turns out he'd just "storrowed" it under the Jason Street overpass. If you're not familiar with the term, storrowing is what happens when a truck that's too tall tries to pass under a low bridge and the top gets torn clean off. It's named after Storrow Drive in Boston, where this happens so often it's basically a running joke at this point. Now Pittsfield has its own case of it.

The sign in front of that overpass clearly says 11 feet 8 inches. The truck was taller than that, and he either didn't see the sign or didn't realize his truck wouldn't clear it. He told me he was out delivering packages and just needed to get to the other side of the bridge.

The good news is he wasn't hurt. I asked if he wanted me to call the police and he said no. But a coworker of mine reminded me that police need to know any time that bridge gets hit, because CSX (railway owner) has to come check the structure. That overpass takes a hit every so often. He mentioned he was from Arizona and was not a fan of how low our bridges are here in Massachusetts. As I was calling it in, he took off!

Moral of the story, folks: check your truck's height before you go driving under a bridge.
