Man Airlifted to Baystate After SUV Collides With Flatbed Trailer on Cheshire Road
A serious crash shut down part of the morning on Cheshire Road today, and it sent one driver to the hospital with life threatening injuries, according to a press release from the Pittsfield Police Department.
Pittsfield Police, Pittsfield Fire, and Action Ambulance all rushed to the area of 500 Cheshire Road, just south of the Lanesborough town line, around 3:46 a.m. Someone had called in a motor vehicle crash with injuries.
When crews got there, they found a GMC Terrain that had crashed into an empty flatbed tractor trailer owned by Unistress Corporation. Police say the SUV was heading south on Cheshire Road when the tractor trailer crossed the road in front of it. The SUV ended up wedged underneath the trailer.
The driver of the GMC Terrain, a 67-year-old man, was hurt badly enough that he was first taken to Berkshire Medical Center, then airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield because his injuries were so severe. The truck driver, a 53 year old man from Dalton, was not hurt.
Because of where the crash happened, police did not need to shut down Cheshire Road. Officers from the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section also came out to help at the scene, since a commercial truck was involved.
The Pittsfield Police Traffic Unit is still investigating what led up to the crash. If you saw the accident happen, or if you saw the tractor trailer on Cheshire Road before it happened, police want to hear from you. You can call Sergeant David Hallas at 448-9700 extension 560, or Officer Brandon Gallagher at extension 54.
