7-Year-Old Williamstown Child Dies in Bicycle Crash on Main Street

A 7 year old child from Williamstown died Friday evening after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's office.

The crash happened around 5:39 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Buxton Hill Road. Police say the child was riding down Buxton Hill Road toward Main Street and unintentionally entered the roadway, where they were struck by a vehicle traveling east on Main Street.

The child was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. They (singular) died at the scene.

Investigators say the driver was not impaired by alcohol or drugs. The investigation remains active.

Berkshire District Attorney Timothy Shugrue asked the press and public to respect the family's privacy during what he called an impossibly difficult situation. Out of respect for that request, the child's name is not being released at this time.

Several agencies responded to the scene, including Williamstown Police, Williamstown Fire, Northern Berkshire EMS, and Massachusetts State Police out of the Cheshire Barracks. The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section also responded, along with the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has taken the case, which is standard procedure in a fatal crash.
