David Ortiz Shot in Dominican Republic Sunday

Several news outlets are reporting tonight that former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was shot Sunday in the Dominican Republic.

CNN.com reports that Felix Durán Mejia, spokesman for the Dominican National Police. said that Ortiz was shot in the back in "an incident that took place at Dial Discotheque in Santo Domingo", his hometown.

The 43 year old, known as "Big Papi" was taken to a local facility for surgery. ESPN.com reported that "One of the doctors who performed the surgery told Dominican TV station CDN 37 that Ortiz is out of danger."  According to a witness, a man was being detained in connection with the incident.
