David Ortiz, the beloved Red Sox legend, was shot at nearly point-blank range on Sunday night at a restaurant/club in the Dominican Republic.

Although he is expected to recover, according to boston.com, Ortiz has suffered some organ damage as a result of being shot. Ortiz was shot in the lower back and the bullet exited through his abdomen.

In an update Monday morning, Ortiz’s representatives told reporters that the beloved baseball player was stable, but remained in intensive care, after six hours of surgery. According to ESPN, doctors had to remove part of Ortiz’s intestines and colon, as well as his gallbladder. He also reportedly suffered liver damage. -boston.com

Ortiz is currently in intensive care and heavily sedated.

It was said by multiple sources that Ortiz was ambushed by a man who pulled up on a motorcycle. The man was later beaten by a crowd and later arrested.

Many of Ortiz's former teammates including Pedro Martinez and Jon Lester, as well as many others, have tweeted their love and support.
