Summertime in Berkshire County means swimming, biking, hiking, and another fun outdoor activity...fishing. Fishing is definitely a fun outdoor activity that really brings family and friends together. What if your child could fish but also win some prizes? Well, that opportunity is coming to the youngsters this weekend in the Berkshires.

Friends of the Berkshire National Fish Hatchery is holding a fishing derby at the hatchery in New Marlborough for kids ages 13 and under, and there will be some great giveaways, including derby T-shirts along with additional prizes. Get this. If your child reels in a fish with a special tag during the derby, he or she will win Cabela's gift cards. According to the hatchery's website, no child will leave the event empty-handed.

Do I Need My Own Equipment to Participate in the Kids' Fishing Derby?

As mentioned before, this will be a great event to bring family together and an excellent opportunity for children to learn how to fish. If you don't have equipment for the derby, that's perfectly fine; the hatchery will supply equipment for you/the kids, including fishing poles to borrow, bait, and volunteers ready to help beginners catch their first fish.

Why Only for Young Children?

You may be wondering why the event is geared toward younger children (13 and under). The reason for this is to encourage the next generation of anglers. However, adults and teens are welcome to enjoy the trails, hatchery tours, fly-tying and casting programs, birdwatching, and other events the hatchery hosts throughout the year. This is according to the Friends of the Berkshire National Fish Hatchery's Facebook page.

This weekend's free derby will take place on Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Berkshire National Fish Hatchery in New Marlborough. Go catch that big one.
