Massachusetts is home to many things, including history, art, culture, music, the Red Sox, and more. Over the years, Massachusetts has topped various lists as the best state to raise a family. Part of the reason for that is the Bay State's incredible school systems, so it shouldn't be a surprise that Massachusetts has recently been the best state in the country for school systems in 2026.

WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 32 key metrics. WalletHub took into account performance, funding, safety, class size, and instructor credentials when determining the best school systems in America.

The study found that Massachusetts is the top state for the best school systems in America for 2026.

Quality & Safety of Schools in Massachusetts (1=Best; 25=Avg.):
Overall Rank: 1st
1st – Math Test Scores
1st – Reading Test Scores
9th – Pupil-Teacher Ratio
24th – Median SAT Score
3rd – Median ACT Score
14th – Dropout Rate
9th – Bullying Incidence Rate
5th – % of Threatened/Injured High School Students

When you see this type of performance, it's no wonder why families want to move to Massachusetts. If giving children the best shot at a quality education is a top priority, then Massachusetts is the place to be.

What also makes Massachusetts attractive for its quality education is the Bay State's safety factor. WalletHub noted that  Massachusetts has the fifth-lowest share of students who report being threatened or injured with a weapon on school property, the third-lowest share who have been in a physical fight at school, and the fourth-lowest share who report illegal drugs being available to them on school property.

Other states that made the top-5 cut include Connecticut (#2), New Jersey (#3), New Hampshire (#4), and Wisconsin (#5). You can view the entire report by going here.
