A Connecticut man died last Thursday as a result of injuries he sustained due to a head on collision on Rte. 8 in Otis.

At approximately 9:09 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, Otis Police were dispatched to 1322 South Main Road in Otis for a report of a two-vehicle collision. Upon arrival, an officer observed two tractor trailers lodged in a snowbank. One was in the northbound lane with Connecticut plates, and the other was in the southbound lane with Oklahoma plates, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office.

The officer began rendering aid to the driver of the northbound tractor trailer, identified as Antonio Marcucci, 32 years old, from Waterbury, Connecticut. Mr. Marcucci was pinned inside the cab of his truck. The driver of the southbound tractor trailer from Oklahoma did not receive serious injuries. Mr. Marcucci was transported to Baystate Medical Center by Otis EMS, where he was pronounced deceased.

Early investigation, including dash camera footage from one of the tractor trailers, shows the following. The Oklahoma tractor trailer was traveling in the southbound lane. The Connecticut tractor trailer was traveling in the northbound lane. The Connecticut tractor trailer lost control, veered off the road, and ended up in the southbound lane. Shortly after, the two tractor trailers collided head-on.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Law enforcement response included Otis Police, Otis Fire/EMS, Massachusetts State Police, MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, MSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit.
