Blood Moon and Winter Weather Advisory For Berkshire County 3-5 Inches of Snow
A once in every one to three years blood moon was slightly visible on Tuesday morning in Berkshire County. I was able to see the partial lunar eclipse a little bit on the drive in to work, however, full totality around 6:33 a.m. was not visible due to extensive cloud cover in Pittsfield. Early 2029 will be the next one visible from North America.
If you haven't made your plans for today, you may want to factor in some slippery roads. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Berkshire County starting at noon Tuesday and running through 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Snow is expected to develop by late morning and pick up through the afternoon, with a 90 percent chance of precipitation. Forecasters are calling for 3 to 5 inches of accumulation for the Pittsfield area, with temperatures hovering right around the freezing mark - topping out near 31 degrees with light southerly winds.
TUESDAY: Cloudy with snow. Some mixed winter precipitation possible. High 31F. Winds SSE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 90%. Snow accumulating 3 to 5 inches.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Freezing rain early with fog developing overnight. Areas of patchy fog developing. Low 28F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precip 100%.
The timing is worth keeping in mind if you're heading out during the lunch hour or the evening commute. Snow is expected to be steady through the afternoon before tapering overnight. Temperatures will drop into the upper 20s by Wednesday morning, which means any untreated roads and sidewalks could get icy as things wind down.
The good news?
Wednesday looks much better, mostly sunny with a high near 46 degrees, so any mess left behind should clear up quickly.
This is a late-season reminder that March in the Berkshires doesn't always play nice. If you need to be out on the roads today, give yourself extra time, slow down, and make sure you've got an ice scraper handy. And if you can wait until Wednesday to run your errands, that might be your best bet.
