Planet Fitness announced that teens ages 14 through 19 could workout all summer long for free. The plan that runs from June 1 until August 31 is happening now, but the gym doesn't seem that crowded. Why?

The term "crowded" is subjective, I know, but it's an inexpensive corporate gym, so I'm sort of used to crowds at some level - but I though the place was going to be overrun by teenagers.

Gyms absolutely thin out in the summertime, so this allows for the extra bodies, I suppose.

Why Massachusetts Gyms Empty Out Every June

When I started back up at the gym last fall with a much more dedicated, consistent schedule, I promised myself I wouldn't falter again - until a few weeks ago. That June sunshine smacked me in the face along with that warm embrace of the sun which enveloped me like a warm comfortable blanket - I just wanted to be outside and not in the air conditioned gym.

  • The weather: people opt to exercise outside - walking, running, kayaking, swimming, biking. The nice weather is only here for so long in the northeast, and the sun is out longer!
  • Motivation fades: In January - you are rip roaring to go and seemingly so is everyone else, but if you're gonna fall off the motivation train, you're probably out of the June by June.
  • People's schedules: I'm a dad of five so, out children dictate a lot of what we can do. Every one of our children participates in sports, so it gets unpredictable in the summertime, plus add in there vacations and poor eating habits - you're stable gym routine with healthy eating can collapse!
