Thanksgiving is basically here - following that is Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and then the Christmas season. Your USPS carrier will be working harder than usual in the next 6 weeks, so you feel might feel inclined to tip them! Can you?

Yes, you can tip your USPS mail carrier, but there are strict rules because they are federal government workers.

What they CAN accept:

  • Small gifts worth $20 or less per occasion (like a $10 gift card)
  • They can get many of these small gifts, but nothing over $20 from the same person at one time.
  • Cash, checks, or cash-equivalent gift cards are NEVER allowed - no matter how small the amount.
  • During the whole holiday season, the total value of all gifts from one customer cannot be more than $50.

Why are there these rules?

Mail carriers work for the U.S. government. The rules stop people from trying to bribe them or give special treatment to certain houses. The government wants every mailbox treated equally and fairly.

What can’t they take?

  • Any cash or cash-like gift cards (even $5).
  • Expensive gifts (a $100 restaurant gift card, big bottles of alcohol, etc.).
  • Anything that feels like payment for doing their normal job.

Do people break the rules?

Yes, lots of people try! Many customers slip $10 or $20 cash into holiday cards without knowing it’s against the rules. Carriers are trained to politely say no or leave the money behind. If they get caught accepting cash, they can get in big trouble or even lose their job.

So the safest way to say thank you is a cold drink on a hot day, homemade treats, or a small non-cash gift card under $20.
