Adams Police Officer Fires Weapon During Mental Health Crisis Call
An Adams police officer fired his weapon Monday night while responding to a reported stabbing, though no one was struck by the gunfire, according to a release from the Berkshire County District Attorney's Office.
The incident began around 8:39 p.m. when a 911 caller reported his friend had been stabbed at 31 Commercial Street in Adams. Police now believe the caller was 25-year-old resident who inflicted injuries on himself and fabricated the story about a friend being hurt.
When an Adams officer arrived at the scene at 8:43 p.m., the man approached in a threatening manner while holding an object. The officer discharged his weapon, but the bullet did not strike anyone. The man was taken into custody shortly after without further incident.
Massachusetts State Police were notified at 9:15 p.m. and responded to investigate the officer-involved shooting. Detectives found blood around the sidewalk, entryway, and interior of the residence. Early evidence suggests the man acted alone and there was no actual victim.
The 25-year-old is being held at Berkshire Medical Center for a mental health evaluation and is in stable physical condition. He has three outstanding warrants and is expected to be arraigned today in Northern Berkshire District Court.
Body camera footage captured the incident. State Police detectives are interviewing witnesses and officers involved, and are awaiting a ballistics report.
The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
The investigation is ongoing, and a full press release will be issued upon its completion.
