Elon Musk Says He’ll Cover $23 Million a Day in TSA Paychecks During the Shutdown
Elon Musk just offered to pay the missed salaries for TSA workers who are stuck without pay because of the government funding problem, according to his X account.
On Saturday, March 21, he posted: “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.”
Right now, the United States is dealing with a partial government shutdown that started on February 14. Because of that, about 50,000 TSA employees at airports across the country have been working without full pay. They missed their first full paycheck in mid-March, and many are about to miss a second one next week. This is hitting hard during spring break when millions of people are flying.
To cover all those salaries, it would cost roughly 23.6 million dollars per day. That adds up fast when you have 50,000 workers to support.
According to a Reuters report citing federal data, TSA staff earn an average of about $61,000 per year (3). With a workforce of roughly 50,000, that translates to about $58.65 million per week. -yahoofinance.com
Musk stepped up because he saw how this funding impasse is hurting regular families. These TSA officers keep showing up to keep air travel safe, but they worry about paying rent, buying food, and filling up their cars. He wants to help ease that burden for the workers and make things smoother for travelers too.
Can Elon do that?
President Trump liked the idea and basically said, “Let him do that.”
This is still just an offer for now. No one knows exactly how it would work with government rules, but it feels like a generous move. Musk wants to support these essential workers who are doing their jobs even when the pay is delayed.
If this plan actually happens, it could take some stress off thousands of TSA families and help keep our airports running smoothly during one of the busiest travel times of the year.
