
Massachusetts Authorities Warn Residents of New $30,000 Jury Duty Scam

Norfolk County Sheriff Patrick McDermott is warning Massachusetts residents about scammers latest angel being used to steal money. The latest scam highlights criminals calling and claiming to work for local sheriff’s offices or local police departments, informing innocent residents that they have allegedly missed jury duty.
The callers told victims that they had missed jury duty and that there was an active warrant out their arrests, and threatened jail time. The latest scam was discovered when one Weymouth woman called the Norfolk Sheriff's Office to continue a conversation about an alleged warrant. When officials informed her that she was being scammed, she revealed she had wired two separate payments of both $20,500 and $6,500 along with a $4,500 and $100 payments via ApplePay.
Please spread the word with your family and friends that the sheriff’s offices and local police do not make calls like this. The callers may threaten you with jail, but you should just hang up and report the call to the police. Do not share any personal information with these callers.

Just prior to this, residents in Sharon and Dedham let authorities know they had been duped in the same scam to the tune of almost $7,000. The set-up was the same, callers posed as members of local law enforcement and claimed that they had missed jury duty and now had active warrants out for their arrest.
