Pittsfield Fire Rescues Man Trapped in Apartment Fire

A Friday afternoon apartment fire in Pittsfield left one resident unconscious and trapped on the second floor, but was rescued thanks to the quick work of the Pittsfield Fire Department.

Pittsfield Fire responded to 483 Pecks Road for reports of an apartment fire shortly after 12 p.m. this past Friday. Upon arrival, smoke was already pouring from the building and neighbors informed firefighters that a resident may be trapped in an apartment on the second floor.

Firefighters entered the apartment and saw “heavy fire and high heat conditions” in the second-floor kitchen before they quickly located an unconscious man in the living room. Crews worked feverishly under fire conditions to rescue the man, carrying him from the building. The man was taken to Berkshire Medical Center by Action Ambulance and shortly after arrival was airlifted to Mass General. There is no update on his condition at this time.

Engine 5 made entry into the apartment on fire and located the victim with Engine 3. Other tasks on the fire ground included ventilation, primary & secondary searches, checking for extension of fire, and overhaul by Tower 1 and Engine 1.

The apartment was heavily damaged by fire, heat, and water. A second apartment was also damaged by the fire. It was unknown how many people were displaced, but no one else was injured in the fire.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated by the Pittsfield Fire Investigation Unit with officials from the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
